An Open Letter to My Cousin on His Wedding Day

Hey Cousin,

I know where you came from and I know where you’ve been.

Growing up you’ve had the odds stacked against your favor and were left to contend with much far less than what you deserved.

But you are here now.

You are here despite living in a world where your survival is not expected. A society where you are not valued, praised or accepted. Where backs are turned.

You are here after abandonment. And making a way out of no way, you have built a life for yourself.

And I am proud.

I am proud because there were many reasons why you would have not been able to make it. But you did anyway. You’ve learned, you’ve grown, you’ve put in the effort and you’ve not given up.

I am proud because you’ve chosen.

You’ve chosen family, responsibility, accountability and loyalty in a world where those values are increasingly absent.

And you’ve chosen love.

So, now, I’m wishing.

Wishing you all of the beauty that a life partner can bring.

Wishing you good health, prosperity and longevity.

Wishing you comfort of heart and peace of mind.

Wishing you the courage to continue to be the parent you’ve never had.

Wishing you the strength to lead your family and to always uplift your wife through good times and bad.

And I wish you and your bride all of the happiness that what you’ve built can bring.

Ecstatic to share in this day, your wedding day.

Love you.
